For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness. For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man who trusts in You!
Good morning friends. In my humble opinion, the beauty of these psalms is perhaps the choice of the writer to articulate these extraordinary narratives out of some of life’s ugliest experiences; as an expression of his worship to God. He didn’t do it as part of his job or out of a moral obligation; but rather, he wrote out of a heart of gratitude and thanksgiving – and that for me dear friends is truly inspiring! For God’s love and faithfulness, compelled him to write, share and enjoy with fellow pilgrims while he was in his mortal form.
Allow me to add at this juncture that a relationship with God does not promise a life without challenges, but rather it guarantees God’s help in our times of trouble. In the words of Jesus to strengthen this argument, He said:
These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.
Paul built upon this truth with these words in a letter to friends in Philippi:
and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
He talks about this indescribable peace that comes from a genuine relationship with God. An inner peace in times of trouble, trials, tribulation, pain, disappointments, and suffering; something on the inside that reassures him that everything is going to be alright… The psalmist articulates this concept in one of his musical expressions with these words:
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
Wow… As I bring this thought to a close, I’m drawn again to those words from our opening verses:
For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness
I dare say, that our good friend the psalmist had his heart on God’s kingdom, and his eyes on eternity.
