In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” But He said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.”
Therefore the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?” Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.
Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest! And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.
For in this the saying is true: ‘One sows and another reaps.’ I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.”
Jesus said this emphatically to His audience, in a view to paint a mental picture in their minds of true worship, and His assignment while on planet earth.
Good morning friends. I submit to you this morning that some people know what they ought to be doing, but they lack the will and knowledge of how to accomplish it; for these people life is evidently frustrating. Some see life as a collection of experiences; to them life is just an experience to be occupied with fleeting pleasures and vain toil. And finally, there are those that are clear on: what life is, the seasons and times, and how they fit into it all.
With this in mind you might be wondering what your purpose in life is. Well, let me stir you a little using Jesus’ response to a certain lawyer who asked Him the same question; sadly, with the wrong motive. In any case, Jesus replied:
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and ‘your neighbor as yourself
So dear friends the key to a purposeful life can be found in the key to eternal life. And we can achieve this by denying ourselves the “pleasures” and vain glory a spiritually bankrupt life has to offer, and apply His guidance and teaching in our lives daily. Jesus sets a precedence, His life was a life of love demonstrated in service to God and humanity.
In closing, let’s ponder over this paradigm shift from our opening verses:
Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!
Get up and let’s start now, what are you waiting for? Stop procrastinating, the time is drawing near, and Jesus is coming soon. He comes with judgement and rewards. Judgement for time wasters, and rewards for true and faithful witnesses.
