The Words of Our Elders: C S Lewis (1898–1963)

The man who is contented to be only himself, and therefore less a self, is in prison. My own eyes are not enough for me, I will see through those of others. Reality, even seen through the eyes of many, is not enough. I will see what others have invented …. in reading great literature I become a thousand men and yet remain myself. Like the night sky in the Greek poem, I see with a myriad eyes, but it is still I who see. Here, as in worship, in love, in moral action, and in knowing, I transcend myself; and am never more myself than when I do.

~ C S Lewis

The Words of Our Elders: Aurelius Augustinus (354-430 CE)

It is not the being seen of men that is wrong, but doing these things for the purpose of being seen of men. The problem with the hypocrite is his motivation. He does not want to be holy; he only wants to seem to be holy. He is more concerned with his reputation for righteousness than about actually becoming righteous. The approbation of men matters more to him than the approval of God. ~ Aurelius Augustinus

The Words of Our Elders: Martin Luther (1483-1546)

I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God’s hands, that I still possess. ~ Martin Luther
