“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Good morning friends. Moses commanded the people to love God will every facet and fibre of their being: spirit, soul and body; no stones unturned, no room for laxity. You may be thinking this is old school, but I hear Paul writing to his friends in similar vain:
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
He went on to strengthen this thought in another letter, with these words:
For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain
Unlike other beings, we are hybrids, comprising of a spirit, a soul and a body. We posses the highest form of intelligence on planet earth. We posses the ability to live in the past, present and future. We have the capacity to share knowledge with each other, and pass it on to our offsprings. As a result, we can build upon knowledge, and increase in understanding.
With this in mind, God admonished His people through Moses, not only to play their part in their lifetime; but also to pass it on to their offsprings. This was to be made possible through the family. So dear friends, the family has a critical role in the grand scheme of things; it is a platform for the posterity of the faith.
In Jesus’ effort to explain this very unique mutual symbiosis or co-decency, He encapsulates it with these words:
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.
This is the life my friends! This is the purpose of our existence, this is the life we were called out to lead; one where our worship is central, and, it finds expression in every sphere of our influence.
