This Sunday @ Healingsprings fellowship

Last week we explored the historical setting in which the prophet Hosea operated. We looked at the Covenant, its impact on the destiny of the nation of Israel, and perhaps most importantly, the difference with the New Covenant by faith in Christ.

This week I will delve into the underlying theme of the prophet’s message, and the challenges he faced in his effort to win the hearts and minds of his audience back in Covenant with Yahweh.

In his words:

“When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. But the more they were called, the more they went away from me. They sacrificed to the Baals and they burned incense to images.

It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them by the arms; but they did not realize it was I who healed them.
I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love. To them I was like one who lifts a little child to the cheek, and I bent down to feed them” – Hosea 11:1-4

Sunday @ Healingsprings fellowship

Last week we explored the poetry, history, culture, spirituality landscape, theology, philosophy, teaching, vision and worldview of Hosea.

On Sunday I built on those spiritual gains as we focused on the history, structure of the book, and overview of the chapters.

In the words of the prophet:
“Come, let us return to the Lord. He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds. After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence.

Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear;he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.”

– Hosea 6:1-3

Today @ Healingsprings fellowship

Unlike Amos, Hosea’s take on the spiritual state of Israel and Judah is slightly different. For Hosea, the faith had to modernise. As such, contextualisation of imagery and language were his tools of choice in this final attempt to win the hearts and minds of the people back to Yahweh.
At this crucial point in the history of his people, how far can he adapt contextualisation without loosing the essence of his faith?
So, like most thinkers and theologians worth their salt today, this dear friends was Hosea’s dilemma. Hosea saw a thin line between obscurity and syncretism in his quest for a safe space for his reform agenda.

Join us as we explore the poetry, history, culture, spirituality landscape, theology, philosophy, teaching, vision and worldview of Hosea; and its application and relevance in our time.
In the words of the prophet:

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. – Hosea 4:6
