While we bury our heads in the sand doing ‘church as usual’, the barriers of consciousness are being pushed with robotics and artificial intelligence.

In fact scientists predict that before the end of this century we will see bespoke interventions to alter DNAs, and biomechanics that can enhance our current capabilities beyond our wildest dreams.

In a global context we see countries like Singapore, Mexico, India and China benefit from the impact of cheap labour as companies in the West are pushed to increase profit margins for shareholders, and fend-off competitors.

But where is the developing and underdeveloped world in all this?

Is this something we ought to be thinking about?

Phased with similar challenges in his era, in one of his reflection prophet Jeremiah notes,

“If you have raced with men on foot and they have worn you out, how can you compete with horses? If you stumble in safe country, how will you manage in the thickets by the Jordan? – (Jeremiah 12:5)

Where do we start, and how do we realign the levels of inequality in our world?

A Christ-inspired business is not one that begins with prayers.

Neither is it one that only employs Christians, or one that preaches conversion to customers, or one that pays a tenth to a church or parachurch organisation….

Dear friends, we are all involved in commerce. We buy products and services we want or need, and we provide products and services of some sort to customers.

How do we use our purchasing power to influence the kinds of products and services that are available in the market?

How do we create, develop, and sell products or services that are inspired by love and kindness.

How do we realign the power relationship between developed, emerging and underdeveloped economies?

How can we make the world a much better and equal place for all of humanity?

Join us as we explore the building blocks for a Christ-centred commerce.

The Words of Our Elders: Billy Graham

We have not yet learned that a man is more powerful on his knees than behind the most powerful weapons that can be developed.

We have not learned that a nation is more powerful when it unites in earnest prayer to God than when its resources are channeled into defensive weapons.

We have not discovered that the answer to our problems can be through contact with God…

What a glorious thing it would be if millions of us would avail ourselves of the greatest privilege this side of Heaven!

~ Billy Graham

The Words of Our Elders: Martin Luther (1483-1546)

“I would not give one moment of heaven for all the joy and riches of the world, even if it lasted for thousands and thousands of years.”

Spiritual Intelligence: Divine Connection

Then Jesus cried out and said, “He who believes in Me, believes not in Me but in Him who sent Me. And he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness. And if anyone hears My words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak.”

Good morning friends. At the point of this insightfully spiritual lecture, Jesus was close to His death. A death He freely accepted in fulfilment with; prophecies, God’s will for His life, and God’s plan for the redemption of humanity. So, in the spirit of preparation, He was executing His exit strategy. A central part of this strategy was the delivery of key lectures in open forums where questions could be asked by His audience.

With that in mind, this lecture presents Him as the sent one. The one sent to be a model for humanity. The one sent to reflect God’s power and love on earth as the light of this world, the one sent to be the saviour of the world. At a time when heaven kissed earth, both realms were in harmony, and the church was conceived – glory hallelujah! He was sent to reconnect us with the father.

Let us pray:

Father, we bring our lives before you today. We realise that without your spirit, we are powerless.

We acknowledge that its your spirit that works in us, both to will and to do of your good pleasure. So we pray that your Holy Spirit will start a work in us today.

We need you Holy Spirit, our souls long for you as the deer pants for water. Amen.

Spiritual Intelligence: The Eyes of The Lord

Then the word of the Lord came to Samuel: “I regret that I have made Saul king, because he has turned away from me and has not carried out my instructions.” Samuel was angry, and he cried out to the Lord all that night.

Good morning dear friends. I submit to you this morning that our destiny is in our hands. In the grand scheme of things God has a plan for humanity, but these plans can only be unravelled through our cooperation with Him. In our opening verses, God used the following words to describe the state of King Saul’s heart to Samuel; “I regret that I have made him king, because he has turned away from me and has not carried out my instructions”. Simply put, his disobedience got heaven looking for a replacement. The Lord’s matter is of supreme importance, no man can hold heaven to ransom. The search for a successor had started.

This my friends explains the process of Calling and Election. Saul was called, but as a result of his actions, he was ultimately not chosen (election). Yet he continued as king until God found a replacement, and His replacement was ready to ascend the throne,

…for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable.

We see this process of divine succession planning at play all through the pages of the bible. In fact when Amos caught light of this revelation; he boldly declared;

The Lord will surely do nothing until He reveals His secrets to His servants the prophets.

So in crystallising this thought, I lend from the prophecies of Hanani, when he was sent to confront king Asa on his decision to make an unholy alliance against an attack from an enemy nation. This angered The Lord because the enemy in question could not be compared in strength, size or capability, to the ones The Lord had delivered him from previously. So he said;

… For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. You have done a foolish thing, and from now on you will be at war.’

“Heaven helps those who help themselves” ~ Algernon Sidney

We help ourselves, and we attract the attention of almighty God, when we walk in humility and obedience to His word; when we have been found faithful in the little things that have been committed into our hands.

Lets us pray. Father let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Let your spirit be at work in me, to will, and to do only what is pleasing to you. Let not my slippery footstep slide, Lord hold me so I do not fall. Amen.

Spiritual Intelligence: Because Your Love Is Better Than Life, My Lips Will Glorify You!

As a backdrop, let’s consider the following excerpts from John’s revelation in the Isle of Patmos;

“And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,

And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.

And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.”

Good morning friends. You will agree with me from these verses that the war of wars (the war between humankind and our adversary the devil), was won by two potent arsenals; the blood of the lamb, and the words of our testimony.

The former is a done deal; Christ came, He preached and performed great signs and wonders. He was crucified, He died and was buried, He rose up on the third day, left His Holy Spirit with us, and He’s now in heaven until the restoration of all things, and His glorious return.

The latter however is an active choice by the believer. A testimony can be defined as a formal written or spoken statement. With that in mind, let’s consider the following prompts; What do we say about our God to friends and colleagues? Are we ashamed of the Gospel? What do we say in our minds when we are faced with challenges?

In the words of the Psalmist;

I have seen you in the sanctuary
and beheld your power and your glory.
Because your love is better than life,
my lips will glorify you.
I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift up my hands.
I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

Let us pray. Father, fill us with your Holy Spirit. Empower us to be true and faithful witnesses – amen!
