“We have different forms assigned to us in the school of life, different gifts imparted. All is not attractive that is good. Iron is useful, though it does not sparkle like the diamond. Gold has not the fragrance of a flower. So different persons have various modes of excellence, and we must have an eye to all.”
― William WilberforceThe words of our elders, are words of wisdom.

Then the word of the Lord came to Samuel: “I regret that I have made Saul king, because he has turned away from me and has not carried out my instructions.” Samuel was angry, and he cried out to the Lord all that night.
Good morning dear friends. I submit to you this morning that our destiny is in our hands. In the grand scheme of things God has a plan for humanity, but these plans can only be unravelled through our cooperation with Him. In our opening verses, God used the following words to describe the state of King Saul’s heart to Samuel; “I regret that I have made him king, because he has turned away from me and has not carried out my instructions”. Simply put, his disobedience got heaven looking for a replacement. The Lord’s matter is of supreme importance, no man can hold heaven to ransom. The search for a successor had started.
This my friends explains the process of Calling and Election. Saul was called, but as a result of his actions, he was ultimately not chosen (election). Yet he continued as king until God found a replacement, and His replacement was ready to ascend the throne,
…for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable.
We see this process of divine succession planning at play all through the pages of the bible. In fact when Amos caught light of this revelation; he boldly declared;
The Lord will surely do nothing until He reveals His secrets to His servants the prophets.
So in crystallising this thought, I lend from the prophecies of Hanani, when he was sent to confront king Asa on his decision to make an unholy alliance against an attack from an enemy nation. This angered The Lord because the enemy in question could not be compared in strength, size or capability, to the ones The Lord had delivered him from previously. So he said;
… For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. You have done a foolish thing, and from now on you will be at war.’
“Heaven helps those who help themselves” ~ Algernon Sidney
We help ourselves, and we attract the attention of almighty God, when we walk in humility and obedience to His word; when we have been found faithful in the little things that have been committed into our hands.
Lets us pray. Father let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Let your spirit be at work in me, to will, and to do only what is pleasing to you. Let not my slippery footstep slide, Lord hold me so I do not fall. Amen.
