Fasting
In Matthew 17:14-20, we find the story of a boy possessed with a demon, and the failure of the disciples to set him free. This same story is covered extensively in Mark’s account of Jesus’ life (Mark 9:14-29). It is also noteworthy that in the original manuscripts the word ‘fasting’ was not present in both accounts.
So when Jesus was asked by the Pharisees, ‘Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?’, he responded:
‘… The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast… ‘ (Matthew 9:14-17).
Then in Matthew 6:16-18, Jesus said: ‘When you fast…’
To this end dear friends, we will be exploring Fasting.
During the course of my lecture we will draw from Old and New Testament case studies, with a view to highlight the relevance of this spiritual discipline in our Christian walk today.
