Spiritual Intelligence: The Inkhorn Of Life

Then He called out in my hearing with a loud voice, saying, “Let those who have charge over the city draw near, each with a deadly weapon in his hand.” And suddenly six men came from the direction of the upper gate, which faces north, each with his battle-ax in his hand. One man among them was clothed with linen and had a writer’s inkhorn at his side. They went in and stood beside the bronze altar.

Now the glory of the God of Israel had gone up from the cherub, where it had been, to the threshold of the temple. And He called to the man clothed with linen, who had the writer’s inkhorn at his side; and the Lord said to him, “Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and cry over all the abominations that are done within it.”

To the others He said in my hearing, “Go after him through the city and kill; do not let your eye spare, nor have any pity. Utterly slay old and young men, maidens and little children and women; but do not come near anyone on whom is the mark; and begin at My sanctuary.” So they began with the elders who were before the temple. Then He said to them, “Defile the temple, and fill the courts with the slain. Go out!” And they went out and killed in the city.

The more I study the holy writ, the more I get the impression that God is very clinical in His operations. He is a holy God; whose chief guiding principles are love, order and equity.

Good morning friends. These traits (although to a lesser degree) can also be found in the people He partners with over the course of history. For instance, He gave Noah the exact measurement and details of the ark; He gave Moses precise details of the ark of the covenant; He gave Joshua clear strategy for the campaign to dispossess and claim the promised land; He gave Jeremiah dates of the captivity and return from exile, He gave Daniel indicators and time stamps for future events… Even though they staggered in faith sometime, I get the feeling that these people where the best in their time for His missions. He said concerning Abraham:

For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.”

With that in mind, let’s have another look at our opening scriptures. First, a quick timeline of events; the prophets had warned, mercy had been exhausted, and it was time for judgement to run its course. And in the spirit of equity; judgement will begin in His house first. Even then there had to be accountability, so a witness was nominated (the man with the Inkhorn); with clear instructions to mark the foreheads of those that were not at ease with the status quo. Those that cried unto The Lord day and night in prayer for Justice for the poor, widows, oppressed; those that stood up and spoke against the ills of their time; those that denied themselves any part in the worship of the gods of this world and the fleeting pleasure they had to offer. Finally, their time of vindication had come.

In closing this thought, let’s consider a parable that links seamlessly with our opening verses by Jesus:

Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart, saying: “There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor regard man. Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, ‘Get justice for me from my adversary.’ And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, ‘Though I do not fear God nor regard man, yet because this widow troubles me I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.’”

Then the Lord said, “Hear what the unjust judge said. And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them? I tell you that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?”

The last sentence is worth pondering upon.

Spiritual Intelligence: Food For The Soul

In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” But He said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.”

Therefore the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?” Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.

Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest! And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.

For in this the saying is true: ‘One sows and another reaps.’ I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.”

Jesus said this emphatically to His audience, in a view to paint a mental picture in their minds of true worship, and His assignment while on planet earth.

Good morning friends. I submit to you this morning that some people know what they ought to be doing, but they lack the will and knowledge of how to accomplish it; for these people life is evidently frustrating. Some see life as a collection of experiences; to them life is just an experience to be occupied with fleeting pleasures and vain toil. And finally, there are those that are clear on: what life is, the seasons and times, and how they fit into it all.

With this in mind you might be wondering what your purpose in life is. Well, let me stir you a little using Jesus’ response to a certain lawyer who asked Him the same question; sadly, with the wrong motive. In any case, Jesus replied:

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and ‘your neighbor as yourself

So dear friends the key to a purposeful life can be found in the key to eternal life. And we can achieve this by denying ourselves the “pleasures” and vain glory a spiritually bankrupt life has to offer, and apply His guidance and teaching in our lives daily. Jesus sets a precedence, His life was a life of love demonstrated in service to God and humanity.

In closing, let’s ponder over this paradigm shift from our opening verses:

Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!

Get up and let’s start now, what are you waiting for? Stop procrastinating, the time is drawing near, and Jesus is coming soon. He comes with judgement and rewards. Judgement for time wasters, and rewards for true and faithful witnesses.

Spiritual Intelligence: By My Spirit

Now as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came. And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with Jesus of Nazareth.”

But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are saying.” And he went out on the porch, and a rooster crowed.

And the servant girl saw him again, and began to say to those who stood by, “This is one of them.” But he denied it again.

And a little later those who stood by said to Peter again, “Surely you are one of them; for you are a Galilean, and your speech shows it.”

Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this Man of whom you speak!”

A second time the rooster crowed. Then Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And when he thought about it, he wept.

Good morning friends. The story of Peter’s denial of Christ substantiates the argument for Jesus’ resurrection, and the power of the Holy Spirit. Without a shadow of doubt the disciples had an encounter that empowered them to be described as being in this world, but not of this world. An encounter that transformed them to God agents, forsaking worldly pleasures and false comfort for the transcending glory of the kingdom of God. This was only possible through the power of the Holy Spirit. Hence Jesus said to them;

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

The Holy Spirit worked on all Jesus’ modelling, preaching, teaching and demonstration of power, that the disciples had been witnesses and partakers of; making them true and faithful witnesses. In the words of encouragement from prophet Zechariah to Zerubbabel (the governor of Judah under the Persian rule), during the building of the temple, at a time when the challenges were overwhelming, and the work of rebuilding almost grinding to a halt;

Not by power, nor by might, but by my spirit

Friends, we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit! We need to pray, fast and wait on The Lord to be fortified by His spirit for the coming season of tribulation and persecution, and it starts now.

In the words of king David;

For You have armed me with strength for the battle;
You have subdued under me those who rose up against me.

In the principle of types and shadows; Strength for the battle: Old Testament, power to be witnesses: New Testament!
